I am quite late putting these up, but here’s this year’s batch of costumes for the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival costume deign competition. These four were selected as finalists, made by me, and modeled with the designers at the awards presentation at the beginning of June. HUGE thank you to Sylvia Gilbert-Potts for helping me out this year!

I made a Nightwing costume in three days, and am really proud of it! But, I am having difficulty getting photos that I like; so here’s a quickie we shot in my living room today. Build notes coming soon, and also hopefully some more photos :)

And now, to break up the monotony of book updates and delays, here are some images I shot a couple of weeks ago of my sister :) We both do pole, and these were shot in her living room in a very cramped set-up over Easter weekend in Taranaki.

Lots of little things I’d tweak for next time - the lighting setup is about halfway what I wanted, but there literally was no room to put the second light where I wanted it. Next time, we’ll be shooting in a larger studio!

Hi everyone - update on the drama from last night.

I emailed the printer, outlining my issues and letting them know I wasn’t happy. The outcome of this has been an email informing me that my job is too difficult for digital printing, and that I’d be getting a refund…but no books. Apparently the whole job has been a nightmare from start to finish for them too - would have been really nice if they’d told me they were having such problems so I could try and work with them sooner, but this obviously didn’t happen. I am, obviously, furious.

Once this was confirmed and my (full) refund actioned, I started calling around, and have found a local firm that was very sympathetic to the whole messy situation, and gave me a quote within a couple of hours. HOWEVER: they quoted me for a different binding technique, and when I stopped by to check up on things, they said “OH” and are now trying to sort me out a new quote, having seen a physical copy of what I want. Apparently, this hardcover binding business is a pain in everyone’s butt and there are very few places who will do it in NZ. On the upside, they are two blocks away from me, meaning there will be no couriering stuff up and down the country and I can stop by and check on things personally…when they actually start to happen.

This means:
- there will be more of a delay, and at this point I can’t say for sure what that delay will be. New printer has told me if I haven’t heard from him by Friday to chase him up; hopefully I’ll hear back sooner.

- I may have to change the book size to A4 to avoid the same binding problems with a new company.

- there will be NO ADDITIONAL COST to customers - any difference in pricing will be covered by me.

- in the event (and I hope it doesn’t come to this) that I am unable to find an alternative binder, I will print the books using a different binding process, and customers will be contacted directly to be advised of the situation. If this happens, I will be offering partial refunds, or additional artwork to make up for the difference in final product.

If anyone would like a refund now, please contact me - otherwise, stay tuned, and I’ll let you know as soon as I have some kind of news to share. The last thing I want to do is can the project completely, but I did not even remotely expect this kind of trouble with a book that I thought I’d already finished! Please share this status around so everyone knows what’s happening, and if anyone has any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. Thank you everyone for your patience.

I am very seriously regretting my decision to print with this company. Last Thursday (1st of May) I was told that the latest copy of the book would be couriered out same day. Today, the 6th of May, it arrived, and is the book on the right in these photographs. I checked and double checked my cover file (the last problem that needed adjusting - and for god’s sake, all I was doing was allowing a larger overlap), I attached the top image (with guides included to indicate the physical edges of the covers as opposed to the wrap allowance beyond that) and I have been sent a book that is not only the wrong size, which I’d like to point out is NOT the same size as the previous two I received, but there was a note in the trackpak that he’d helpfully centered my text for me. As you can see, that text is not centered. Not even REMOTELY.
So right now I am pretty furious, and quite upset. I am really painfully aware of how long this whole process is taking, and I want to apologise again profusely for the delays - I honestly thought I would be signing off on the whole run once this last copy arrived, but instead I am writing a shitty email, enclosing some slightly condescending annotated photographs, and considering taking up smoking again, because this SUCKS. I’ll also be phoning them tomorrow (at some point - this always seems to happen when I have to be at work in an Ambulance depot the nest day - not the greatest place to be tantruming over the phone at someone) to get this all sorted out.
I will keep you all up to date as this progresses - the other thing that is driving me crazy is the fact that the proofs are taking so long to get to me. This last one was meant to be sent on Thurs the 1st, was actually sent Fri the 2nd, and didn’t arrive until four days later - not cool. Not even a little bit cool, and honestly, this is where most of the delays have been happening. I am so over dealing with this printer, and once I have the books in hand, I’m writing the most scathing review ever. >:(

Weary, slightly frustrated book update: the advance copies have arrived, and while the PAGES look great…the cover needs one last tweak. These advance copies are for my legal deposit so they are fine for this, but I will be getting one more advance copy just to check that my new cover template is a-ok before committing to the full run…and tbh, I am very glad I caught this mistake now!! I don’t expect any more problems once this is sorted (but then, who does) but due to the easter weekend and ANZAC weekend, there might be some more bloody delays. Sincere apologies everyone, here is a photo of the posters and candy and model prints to prove I haven’t dropped the ball completely! I guess first books are always meant to have teething problems, right? :) Thanks everyone for your patience, I’ll let y’all know as soon as I have some better news! Happy easter break, and I hope everyone’s doing some awesome creative stuff :D

Final book proof has arrived…and I just finished approving it for print!! Again, I’m sorry there have been some delays in printing - but I am sending the final file to the printer tonight (couldn’t resist tweaking one more image) and the whole run will commence asap :)

Estimate from the printer is that it’ll take about a week to print and bind everything, and then it’ll be shipped to me, and I will spend a few days cloistered in my apartment packing everything ready to ship out :D

Posters are printed and waiting for pickup (I ended up working all day today, so won’t be able to pick them up until Wednesday) and I have a whole lot of candy ready to be snuck into the parcels, too. Woo! Nearly there! Thank you so much for your patience everyone, I really appreciate it.
